Refrigeration

"...Years of experience is
the best teacher, but take
extra time and look into
courses and reading material
on refrigeration."
For the first-time ice maker, the compressor and its matching units can be a very intimidating sight. Getting to know your refrigeration plant and how it operates is not just a benefit to your job, it is a must. Learning how to set the thermostat, familiarizing yourself with how it runs, how it sounds, and logging the readings (suction, discharge, oil, temperature, etc.) can not only help you make good ice, but also helps with preventative maintenance. The log can help your refrigeration repair man diagnose the problems if your unit goes down. If you are knowledgeable enough and have the tools to fix a problem, you are an asset to the club, but remember that there are refrigerator repair men trained in the field. Don't be a victim of the old "a little knowledge is dangerous" saying. Keep the number of your repair man handy.

A key note to remember and communicate to your members: Some people think a refrigeration unit puts the cold into a building, when it actually extracts the heat, runs it through the unit and shoots it out the condenser out of the rink, leaving the inside environment cold. The steam you see shooting out the condenser on a cold winter day is actually the heat from the building.

Years of experience is the best teacher, but take extra time and look into courses and reading material on refrigeration. Ice making is an occupation and every ice maker needs their body of knowledge to succeed.

Thanks for dropping by and I look forward to hearing from you!
